Square Enix and the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, have announced that development on Final Fantasy XVI has been delayed by at least half a year and that no new information will arrive by the end of 2021 as initially promised.
In a statement shared to Twitter, Yoshida-san describes the challenges involved in developing during a pandemic to be the primary cause for the game’s delayed production. He (quite candidly) shared that the larger issues caused by COVID-19 and remote work are down to a breakdown of communication between offices as well as lengthened turnarounds and even cancellations from outsourced content partners.
Yoshida-san says that we can now expect to hear more about the game in “Spring 2022”, which should equate to roughly Q2 2022.
