It Turns Out The DualSense Edge’s Battery Is Genuinely Smaller Than The Standard One

Some edges shaved off.

The DualSense Edge, PlayStation’s answer to “pro” controllers like the Xbox Elite Series 2, released yesterday and while reviews have been largely positive and we’ve been impressed with the controller so far, one looming doubt cast over the $340 pad is the potential for it to have an even shorter battery life than the already limited standard DualSense.

Now that the Edge is out there and in players’ hands, it was only a matter of time before someone conducted a thorough teardown of the controller to investigate just what’s going on with the battery from a hardware perspective. Turns out, Sony’s suggestion that the battery life in the DualSense Edge would be slightly shorter rings true, as Australian custom controller business, Budd’s Controllers, has discovered the battery capacity is actually smaller.

After tearing the controller down on Twitch, Budd’s discovered that the Edge’s battery is both physically smaller and of a smaller overall capacity, at 1,050 mAh vs the regular DualSense’s 1,560 mAh. That’s a reduction of around a third of the overall capacity, which seems pretty significant to us. You can see a comparison of both batteries below:

Of course, until more testing is done we don’t know what other changes or magic PlayStation has get the most out of the DualSense Edge’s smaller batter, if any. And just from looking at it, it’s clear that internal space was at a premium in the fancy new controller. For now though, it’s something that will likely put some PlayStation fans off dropping $340 on a new pad that runs out of juice even faster.
