The Resident Evil 4 Remake Is Adding Weapon Breaking And Side Quests

Knife party.

GameInformer has run a 12-page cover story on Capcom’s upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake, having traveled to the company’s HQ in Osaka, Japan to to play two separate chapters of the game.

While you’d need to get a hold of the issue itself to read the lengthy preview in full, some of the juicier details have begun to emerge through other outlets like IGN and VGC, giving fans an idea of what changes to expect in this new version of the game.

Some of those changes include things like the addition of “side quests” which will see players come across special flyers tasking them with completing objectives like delivering specific items or taking down certain creatures as well as some of the original optional collectibles from the game. Completing these will result in extra rewards from the merchant.

A heap of new weapon and combat changes are coming as well, including the implementation of mechanics introduced in the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes like ammo powder mixing, a new aiming reticle, six optional control schemes including a classic layout, enemies that bounce back stronger if they’re not properly executed, quick weapon switching and more. An update that might divide some is the fact that knives will now eventually break, although players can carry multiple and they can be upgraded at the merchant as well as used to deflect melee attacks and escape grapples.

Another part of the preview reportedly covers over changes made to Ashley’s behaviour as an AI companion, where the team has made her a more loyal follower but removed her health bar and introduced more cooperative puzzles.

We played a small portion of Resident Evil 4 ourselves at Tokyo Game Show last year and came away very impressed by how Capcom is playing with the game’s overall tone and atmosphere through cutting-edge visuals while still delivering something faithful for fans.
