Here’s 11 Spooky Minutes Of Layers Of Fear Gameplay

With gorgeous Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals.

Layers of Fear, the upcoming reimagining of Layers of Fear known previously as Layers of Fears (I had no idea how to construct that sentence but I really wanted to attempt it), has had its first big gameplay reveal in a massive 11-minute video shared by developer Bloober Team today.

The trailer shows off gameplay from both the perspective of the Writer, who Bloober has said will serve to tie the narratives of the games together in this anthology-esque remake, and the Painter, the protagonist of the first game. We see some scenes from the new lighthouse location, as well as familiar ones with the Painter interacting with various objects calling back to the first game and using new tools like a handheld lantern to dispel nasties. Interestingly, there looks to be some semblance of combat in the mix, which is a departure from the original.

The video also serves to show off Layers of Fear’s  Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals with a raft of technologies like Lumen and Niagara, ray tracing and volumetric lighting. It all looks rather moody and atmospheric, and the engine’s strengths definitely seem to be working in the game’s favour.

Follow the Painter from the original Layers of Fear, and join the Writer — a recently unveiled character — for a closer look at the latest installment in the Layers franchise. As The Writer, enter the lone and ghastly Lighthouse — a newly-introduced location — and uncover an untold story that links all of the Layers’ characters and events together. Unravel secrets, solve puzzles, and face the threats of the old Mansion that can only be solved with a lantern — a new and essential tool to confront the nightmares in the game!

Layers of Fear is coming out in June this year on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
