Bungie’s Developing A New Marathon Game And It’s A PVP Extraction Shooter

Wow!

This morning saw a huge new PlayStation Showcase with over an hour of reveals, updates and gorgeous trailers.

One huge surprise was the reveal of a brand-new Marathon game from Bungie, debuted in a slick-looking trailer. According to the official website, it’ll be a run-based PVP extraction shooter in “a world of evolving, persistent zones.”

Marathon will reportedly carry the same sense of player-based storytelling Bungie is known for, and even though it’s confirmed to not have a single-player campaign the studio says it’ll still give players a sense of agency and affect over their journey with some discoveries or player actions even potentially having wide-reaching impact on the community.

Bungie’s Christopher Barrett has said, “We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world. At the same time, our vision for this game is something new. It’s not a direct sequel to the originals, but something that certainly belongs in the same universe and that feels like a Bungie game. Finding those opportunities to nod to the universe’s lore, while also getting to build something different and new has been one of the best parts of developing this game so far.”
