The Size Of Star Wars Outlaws’ Handcrafted Planets Has Been Revealed

Ubisoft Massive is putting its name to work.

After Ubisoft Massive finally unveiled its exciting new Star Wars game to the world last month, fans have been eager to learn more about Star Wars Outlaws’ approach to open world exploration and in particular the scope of the different planets that they’ll be able to navigate as protagonist Kay Vess.

In an interview with Edge (shared by GamesRadar), the game’s Creative Director, Julian Gerighty, shared some vague details around the size of its planets, saying ““It’s a crude analogy, but the size of one planet might be about [equivalent to] two of the zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.”

“It could be two to three zones. But it’s not, you know, this sort of epic ‘the whole of England recreated’ approach,” Gerighty continued, saying that each of the planets – for which we don’t yet have a total count – would be “manageable in size for both the player and developer at Ubisoft Massive.

Looking at Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in particular, “two to three zones” could be around a third or half of one of its bigger, main islands. Using some very rough math, that means to match the overall explorable area of Odyssey (not counting oceans), Star Wars Outlaws would have to feature around half a dozen planets or more. Whether or not Massive is shooting for that big of a game remains to be seen, but that hopefully puts it all into a bit of context.

Either way it’s an ambitious undertaking as evidenced by the official gameplay walkthrough revealed at June’s Ubisoft Forward which highlights the near-seamless ground-to-space transitions that will allow players to hop between planetary gameplay and space exploration with barely a hitch.

In our behind-closed-doors preview of the game, we said “If every city and outpost in the game is as dense and living as the one our presentation showed, the Star Wars fandom will be eating very well. With the team already confirming that people and places fans love from the existing canon will pop their heads up, there’s so much reason to be excited for Star Wars Outlaws.

“It’s just a shame that, like the galaxy it features, the game is so far, far away.”

Star Wars Outlaws is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.
