With Grounded II, the documentary chronicling the development of The Last of Us Part II, having just dropped over the weekend, fans were naturally excited to see tidbits and hints of the series’ future contained within. While it’s fairly light on earth-shattering reveals, one quote in particular from creator Neil Druckmann has The Last of Us players excited for the years ahead with a hint at The Last of Us Part III being a reality.
“I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept. That, to me, is as exciting as [The Last of Us] I, as exciting as II, is its own thing, yet has this through line for all III,” Druckmann says as he explains that a concept for the game that genuinely excited him didn’t exist for quite a time, “So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
Druckmann says that a story centred around Tommy has also been written, and since shelved, but could still reappear if not in the form of a game then potentially a different avenue.
Of course, the notion that the game still only exists as a “concept” and without even a story written might not be the news The Last of Us fans were hoping to hear, but it’s also worth noting that this documentary was in development for a number of years so it’s hard to say where things might be at now.

Grounded II is also available to view within The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5. You can read our review of the remaster here, where we said, “The Last of Us Part II Remastered might ring up an emotional toll that some aren’t ready to part with so soon after its original launch, however it’s still a worthwhile release thanks in large part to its celebratory behind-the-scene glimpses at how the game came to be. Adding more value to the package is No Return, an excellent, compact roguelike that feels like an apt showcase for the game’s blunt force combat.”
