Breath of the Wild Has Outsold The Switch Somehow

It hasn’t taken Nintendo long to counter the sad news of the NES Mini’s discontinuation with some great news of their own. It turns out the Nintendo Switch has become their fastest selling console ever, probably to the surprise of not many.

Selling more than 906,000 units in the United States alone in March, the Switch has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history, according to Nintendo’s release.

In a strange twist, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has somehow managed to outsell the console itself, moving 925,000 units on the Switch. That’s an attach rate of 102%, I mean we figured it’d be a system seller but that’s out of control.

Breath of the Wild also managed to move a respectable 460,000 units on the Wii U.

Just how the game managed to outsell the console is a mystery, though it’s likely die-hard fans would have bought multiple copies of the game. Plus, let’s not count out the very real likelihood of scalpers buying the big collector’s editions in the hopes of flipping them at an inflated price down the track.

Nonetheless, this is all fantastic for Nintendo.

Selling almost a million consoles in your first month is a huge effort. The likes of Sony and Microsoft, for comparison sake, each managed roughly two million in their first couple of weeks. So, Nintendo is in the ballpark.
