Wrestling Superstar Kenny Omega Just Entered A Major Japanese Match As Sephiroth

Watch the replay, if you missed the lifestream!

It was a match hailed as an early contender for “Match of the Year” despite us still being in the first week of January, but yesterday’s clash between Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 has made waves for more than just being an epic bout.

Omega, known around the traps for being an avid gamer, commenced the fight with an entrance to remember as he came out dressed in what I assume is about as close as he can get to a full Sephiroth cosplay at a televised wrestling event without Square Enix lawyers breathing down his neck. Not just that, but with very overt Sephiroth-esque imagery going off in the backdrop and ‘One-Winged Angel’ playing, this was certainly a memorable tribute to the famed Final Fantasy VII villain and an exquisite entrance from the much-loved wrestler.

It’s actually not the first time Omega has donned the Sephiroth garb, he’s been doing it since at least 2018, and his signature finisher is literally called The One Winged Angel (CBR writes that his ring name is even a reference to the Final Fantasy series’ regular Omega Weapon boss) but it’s gone somewhat viral online nonetheless.

Check it out in the video below:

Kenny Omega is also heavily involved in the development of the upcoming AEW Fight Forever video game, which we called one of the best games we saw at Gamescom 2022.
