Nintendo Australia’s New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Commercial Just Broke Me

Wasn't ready to feel things today.

It seems that everywhere you look right now, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is there. The Nintendo marketing machine is well and truly in full gear and you really can’t avoid it.

What I didn’t expect though, was a two-minute commercial for the game to inspire a bit of an existential crisis.

The ad, which looks to be a Nintendo Australia production, depicts something that’ll no doubt feel very real to the 30+ crowd among us. It shows a white collar bloke, clearly exhausted by life, finding pure and simple joy in his copy of the game. The ad closes with this person looking out over a coastal sky and pontificating on the pointlessness of the working existence and yearning for the freedom and possibilities of the world, as experienced in hit Nintendo Switch title The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Yes, it’s marketing, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ruin my week. Nintendo aimed the sights of its bow, Fused a chopped onion to the arrow and fired it directly at my sad elder millennial self with this one.

Take a look for yourself:

[Update: As a bit of an unexpected twist on the release of this already-moving commercial, the incommensurable Ruby Innes at Kotaku Australia has provided a deeper glimpse into its creation – and apparent inspiration from an equally-touching Amazon review for Breath of the Wild. Go read that here.]
