This morning at the Resident Evil Showcase, Capcom confirmed that The Mercenaries will be making a return with Resident Evil Village.
Appearing in some form in every mainline game since Resident Evil 3, The Mercenaries is a score-based mode that has your character fighting waves of enemies to get a better score.
The idea was toyed with briefly in Resident Evil 7’s downloadable content too, but the experience was only a little bit reminiscent of what Mercenaries originally was.
The mode will feature a shop that allows for weapon customisation and other skills like increased damage and speed – perhaps the biggest change to the formula, though not surprising to anyone who played Nightmare in Resident Evil 7.
Director Morimasa Sato said that The Mercenaries will be full of surprises and special rewards “for players who persevere” which is a little bit teasing but also exciting.
Resident Evil Village releases for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Google Stadia on May 7th 2021.
