The Last Of Us’ Nick Offerman Says He Stopped Gaming Because Of Banjo Kazooie

Bill's actor admits he hasn't played The Last of Us.

The brilliant Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, Devs) has been doing the press racket in recent days thanks to his debut this week as Bill in HBO’s The Last of Us, in an episode that will go down as some of the best TV of the year.

In a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Offerman admitted that he is yet to play The Last of Us itself, and not for the reasons you might expect. There’s no objection to the horror or violence of the game, nor video games as a medium – instead he’s concerned about being too into it.

Offerman tells Jimmy in the segment, which you can see below, that he’s not played a video game in 25 years due to becomingly a little too enamoured with one game in particular. That game is Rare’s 1998 N64 classic, Banjo Kazooie, which the actor admits he lost a couple of weeks to due to the game’s “slow dopamine drip” and his indulgent nature.

“I decided that I’m never going to do that again, and thankfully because games have gotten so good, like The Last of Us, that I think I’d be in a basement and I wouldn’t even be going to audition for shows like this.”

Aside from the sting of a high-profile actor publicly perpetuating the idea of an unproductive, basement-dwelling gamer, it’s heartening to know that Ron Swanson himself enjoyed the ol’ bear and bird just as much as the rest of us.

You can catch new episodes of The Last of Us every Monday at 1PM AEDT on Foxtel and Binge. Head here to see the full series schedule.

The show was also just renewed for a second season after drawing record-breaking numbers for HBO, and our latest peek into the upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game has us believing it could be a two-player cooperative experience.
