Ubisoft’s Open-World Star Wars Game Could Apparently Launch As Soon As Next Year

Twenty-twenty-force.

It’s been a hot minute since we heard anything about Project Helix, Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world Star Wars gaming in development at its Massive studio (the folks responsible for The Division, The Division 2 and the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora), but if new claims are anything to go by, we may see the game sooner than many like expected.

Kotaku has reported that the game Ubisoft’s internal target for the game’s release is early 2024, but could potentially be pushed back into the following fiscal year, meaning it would launch sometime between April 2024 and March 2025. This is reportedly according to two sources, who told the outlet that Ubisoft’s initial target was “probably too ambitious” and that development hasn’t been progressing well, but that the company has high hopes for the game being a smash hit.

With a release window of sometime maybe next year or early 2025, there’s a good chance we might see this one pop up during the big Ubisoft Forward showcase happening next month.

The last real murmur heard from the official camp was Creative Director, Julian Gerighty, sharing a new year’s message on social media with the tease that 2023 might finally be the year we learn more about this blockbuster Star Wars project, which will be powered by the company’s Snowdrop engine.

Massive had also opened up to user playtesting for the game at the time, putting the call-out in December for players to sign up for a chance to help test and shape the game.

“Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are renowned for their expertise in developing immersive worlds, and in pushing the boundaries of technology with their proprietary engine, Snowdrop,” Lucasfilm Gaming VP, Douglas Reilly had said of the game’s original announcement in 2021. “We know that fans of Star Wars value the feeling of immersion — of being transported into the Star Wars galaxy and moving through richly-detailed environments. It’s fun to imagine what the team at Massive can do within Star Wars by bringing their innovative spirit and their commitment to quality.”
