Alan Wake 2 Will Be Digital Only To Keep The Game’s Price Down

Retail Remedy

We got our first good look at Remedy’s highly-anticipated Alan Wake 2 this morning during the huge PlayStation Showcase, and it revealed some interesting and exciting new details about the sequel.

Alan Wake 2 will introduce dual protagonists into the story, with Wake joined by newcomer Saga Anderson and players able to freely choose the order in which they play along with each.

One other bit of new info that stands out is the fact that the game will be a digital-only release across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC with no form of physical, disc pressing planned at all. Remedy has addressed this fact in an FAQ that it published following today’s trailer, explaining that the decision was made to go all-digital due to the prevalence of digital game downloads and digital-only consoles, plus the desire to keep the cost of entry as low as possible for players.

Here’s the full explanation from the FAQ:

Why is Alan Wake 2 a digital-only release?

There are many reasons for this. For one, a large number of have shifted to digital only. You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console. It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only.

Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $90.95 AUD and the PC version at $75.95 AUD

Finally, we did not want to ship a disc product and have it require a download for the game — we do not think this would make for a great experience either.

A Digital Deluxe Edition is also coming for the game, retailing at $120.95 on console and $106.35 on PC.

The Alan Wake 2 Digital Deluxe Edition includes:

  • Expansion Pass (Night Springs Expansion and Lake House Expansion)
  • Nordic Shotgun Skin for Saga (Part of the Expansion Pass)
  • Parliament Shotgun Skin for Alan
  • Crimson Windbreaker for Saga
  • Celebrity Suit for Alan
  • Lantern Charm for Saga
