Sonic Superstars’ Release Date Has Leaked And It’s Going Head-To-Head With Mario

Here we go!

The dust had barely settled on a special Sonic Central presentation that aired overnight, where a release date for Sonic Superstars was not revealed, but mere hours later a launch date for the brand-new 2D side-scrolling Sonic game leaked anyway via multiple retailers.

According the listings which, having popped up at a few different retailers, seem to be reliably accurate, the game will launch on October 17th this year – putting it in direct competition with Sonic’s age-old rival Mario and his own new 2D platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which releases just three days later on October 20th (also the same day as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 but that’s neither here no there).

Although the leaked date seems solid, the fact that it was omitted from the Sonic Central presentation right before retailers started going live with it suggests that SEGA may have planned to share the date but pulled back following the very recent Nintendo Direct which revealed the existence of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, so there’s every chance this October 17th date is shifted before any kind of formal announcement is made.

Sonic Superstar was first revealed during the recent Summer Game Fest to be an all-new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog platformer with a drop-dead gorgeous 2.5D visual style, multiplayer, heaps of new abilities and mini-game sections and more. It’s coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

According to the official descriptions, Sonic Superstars will take place across the mystical Northstar Islands, allowing players to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Amy solo or in up to four-player co-op. It’ll feature brand new Emerald powers to traverse its “dynamic maps” including multiplying, swimming up waterfalls, transforming and more.
