Ubisoft has just shared its earnings report for the first half of its Fiscal Year 2023-24, and while it’s mostly very positive about its recent performance – overperformance, even – with games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and The Crew Motorfest posting great launch results, it does come with some potentially disappointing news for Star Wars fans.
In the section discussing its full-year outlook for the FY, Ubisoft reiterates its guidance of strong growth for the rest of the year and says that its Q2 performance and the current moment of its brands will build the confidence to get there without the release of another “large game” that it had originally planned to launch during the last quarter of the current fiscal year (January – March 2024). Ubisoft says it has now decided to launch this unnamed game in its FY 2024-25 instead.
While it’s not explicitly named, it’s already believed that this game being delayed is Star Wars Outlaws, due mostly to earlier claims from inside sources that Ubisoft was, in fact, planning to launch the game in the current fiscal year. Those same sources had told Kotaku that this target was likely too ambitious and that they expected it to slip into the next, which seemingly lines up with Ubisoft’s own comments in today’s reports.
Considering that Ubisoft has only ever externally communicated a general “2024” release window for Star Wars Outlaws, and that it could very well still be the case even in the following FY, it gets away with not needing to publicly call out any internal shifting of the schedule, if that’s actually what’s happened here.
In our behind-closed-doors preview of the game, we said “If every city and outpost in the game is as dense and living as the one our presentation showed, the Star Wars fandom will be eating very well. With the team already confirming that people and places fans love from the existing canon will pop their heads up, there’s so much reason to be excited for Star Wars Outlaws.
“It’s just a shame that, like the galaxy it features, the game is so far, far away.”
Star Wars Outlaws is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.
