This morning saw the premier of the year’s first PlayStation State of Play, which gave us a look at around 40 minutes of reveals and updates on games coming to PlayStation in 2024 and beyond. There were some neat surprises (early leaks be damned) as well as some exciting extended looks and new information on upcoming games.
While we were naturally expecting to see the Silent Hill 2 remake show up in the presentation, we also got a first look at Silent Hill: The Short Message – a completely original game set in the world of Silent Hill.
This game reportedly began as an experimental project for the team behind it at Konami. Producer Motoi Okamoto revealed in a PlayStation Blog post that the studio has many staff who are relatively new in their career but love Silent Hill and really wanted to be involved in making a horror game.
Okamoto says of the game’s premise, “We wanted to make a new, modern Silent Hill. As part of that we explored how we could incorporate contemporary problems. We ended up looking at how modern youth communicate online and through phones, and the role that could play in a psychological horror story. For instance, a frightening thing about social media is how even insignificant individual comments can, en masse, build and build until they become this overwhelming wave of hate crashing down on you.”
Best of all, it’s available to download right now and for free. You can grab it from the PlayStation Store right here.
