It looks as though a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft is on the way, thanks to a short post from PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks updates on the PlayStation Store’s backend and routinely has been able to share news of upcoming games or updates ahead of their official announcements.
While this is a pretty strong indication that a PS5 version of Minecraft is on the way, it doesn’t really tell us what that actually means for the game, if anything. Microsoft has long flirted with the idea of a massively-upgraded version of Minecraft on consoles, originally announcing a “Super Duper Graphics Pack” all the way back on Xbox One X that was since cancelled, along with “accidentally” including new ray-tracing features in a preview build of the game on Xbox Series X|S in 2022. If this idea is finally coming to fruition on Xbox Series X|S it would make sense to have parity on the PS5 as well.
On the other hand, a native PS5 Minecraft app could simply just be for the sake of keeping an updated library as things continue to move away from the previous generation of consoles, and may well be near-identical to what we have currently.

Now would be a good time to get the Minecraft train running full steam again though, with the Minecraft movie also on the horizon. The film, which is due to premiere in cinemas on April 5th, 2025, has been steadily amassing an all-star cast that includes the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and now it’s picked up a very recent Emmy winner and absolutely superstar for the ride.
The film’s official synopsis simply reads, “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”
