Nintendo has today announced that the Nintendo Switch has surpassed 10 million console sales since hitting the market in March. This is fairly impressive considering a large period for the console is upcoming with Christmas sales falling in the month of December.
When putting it against other consoles, the PS3 shipped only 5.6 million units in similar time frames, the Xbox 360 only shipped 5.9 million and the Xbox One only shipped 7 million in the first 10.5 months of availability. Even the Nintendo DS which was a smash hit only managed to ship 8.83 million units in the same timeframe. What’s even more impressive is the fact that the Wii U only sold 13.56 million units in its entire life span of four years, so the Switch is almost certain to overtake that in the next 3-4 months.
The PS4 and the Wii both surpassed Switch in the first 10.5 months on shelves with 13.17 and 13.5 respectively, but the entire holiday season was included in that 10.5 months.
As soon as the Switch was announced, I knew it was going to be for me, but I could never predict that it would be this much of a success around the world. It’ll be interesting to see what stops Nintendo pull out next year.
