After the larger drop last week, another of April’s PlayStation Plus Extra games has arrived in the form of Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, a brand-new title from Surgent Studios and published in partnership with EA Originals.
In case you’ve missed it before now, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is a gorgeous-looking metroidvania inspired by themes of loss and grief, as well as Bantu culture and mythology, and helmed by actor Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves, Assassin’s Creed Origins). It’s well worth diving into if you’re a fan of recent genre examples like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, or just want to play something fairly brief (around 8-10 hours) and with an original story to tell – and even more so if you’ve got a PlayStation Plus Extra or Deluxe subscription and can grab it at no added cost.
In my review, I scored the game a healthy 8/10, saying, “Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is an earnest first video game effort from a studio that’s destined for great things. Weak exploration and a lack of combat variety are minor flaws in an overall package that offers up fluid platforming, some great gameplay hooks, an emotionally-resonant story and a rich tapestry of sights and sounds that’s like little else in the space.”
