It’s no secret that gamers have been piling onto The Last Of Us Part II (and anyone associated to it) since the game started leaking prior to launch. It’s been review bombed on Metacritic, a petition has been started to re-create the story, but nothing is more disgusting that the treatment that Laura Bailey (who plays Abby in the game) has received.
Taking to Twitter this morning, Bailey posted the below statement, coupled with screenshots of actual death threats against her and her family:
Man. I try to only post positive stuff on here… but sometimes this just gets a little overwhelming. I blacked out some of the words cuz, ya know, spoilers. Side note. Thank you to all the people sending me positive messages to balance it out. It means more than I can say.

Neil Druckmann, also weighed in on the situation tweeting:
As the people that propagate this kind of hate would say, how stunning and brave! I hope these gamers get the mental help they so clearly need. Unfortunately this is now the cost of making popular entertainment that challenges conventions. Laura doesn’t deserve any of this.
After 1000s of people sending through positive messages, Bailey tweeted out again thanking everyone for the positive and encouraging responses:
Damn. The amount of encouraging responses to this… I’ve always believed that good people far outweigh the bad. Thanks for reminding me of that today.

This is just another reminder to be kind on the internet. I know that it’s extremely easy to send people messages of hate from a faceless profile, but it’s even easier to say nothing at all if you’re feeling angered or upset by something. Also, just a reminder that these are fictional characters.
