It’s time for our annual countdown to award the very best games this year had to offer. Over the next ten days, we’ll count down our top ten games of 2024.
As always, the votes of each Press Start team member, weighted from #10 through to #1, were collated to compile our collective very best for the year that was. Games worthy of one’s top spot would be awarded a maximum of 10 points and the values would descend to their tenth selection, which would receive a single point.
It’s unlikely that gamers will understand how good a middle chapter Rebirth is until the trilogy is actually complete. However, the fact it’s able to do what most second acts can’t do by standing on its own, speaks to just how well Square Enix is realising this remake project.
The task of looking back and recreating one of the most iconic role-playing games of all-time isn’t just a daunting one, it must also be a creative thrill. The original game might have been on three discs, however, this remake is three games, which affords the team to expand upon and refine character arcs, tighten the story structure, and completely overhaul the combat.
Although it could easily coast on nostalgia, Square Enix has put in considerable work to elevate most parts of the Final Fantasy VII experience, which is something that might have been unimaginable at one point in time.
Of course, it was recently confirmed that the game would be coming to PC next year. There’s still no sign of an Xbox port for either Remake or Rebirth, despite the rumour mill running wild, so with any luck they’re not far from a reveal.

In our review, Harry scored Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a 9 out of 10 stating:
“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an immense and expansive middle chapter of this ambitious remake trilogy. A reimagined and redefined behemoth of a game that simultaneously plays on nostalgia and forces you to question your memories of the original. While it suffers from some rote open-world elements and a few technical issues, Rebirth is another magnificent entry into the gilded halls of Final Fantasy.”
On the review aggregator Metacritic, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is resting at an average of 92.
