It’s time for our annual countdown to award the very best games this year had to offer. Over the next ten days, we’ll count down our top ten games of 2024.
As always, the votes of each Press Start team member, weighted from #10 through to #1, were collated to compile our collective very best for the year that was. Games worthy of one’s top spot would be awarded a maximum of 10 points and the values would descend to their tenth selection, which would receive a single point.
After it was confirmed that Bloober Team would be going to work to recreate one of the greatest survival horror games ever made, it’s fair to say a large part of the community embraced the notion with some trepidation. The developer, who had enjoyed a middling kind of success with titles like Layers of Fear and The Medium, didn’t seem like the obvious choice at first.
Fortunately, this return visit to the notable, foggy streets of Silent Hill has been nothing short of a success. After twenty years, it irons out imperfections from its era while remaining entirely faithful to the source material, perhaps setting a new benchmark for how remakes should be handled.
Our dread over the team handling the reimagining fast transitions to the regular kind as the horrors of Silent Hill take hold once more. From sound design to incredible performances, including the award-nominated turn as James from Luke Roberts, Silent Hill 2 proves this tired franchise still has a few scares left in it.
If anything, the quality of this game has me hoping Konami goes after the Resident Evil model of remaking everything that makes sense, and Bloober, in my view, has earned another go-around.

In our review, James B. scored Silent Hill 2 a 9 out of 10 stating:
“Silent Hill 2 is a great remake that captures the essence of the original game, expanding it in all the right ways without ruining the spirit of the original. While this is easily the best game Bloober has ever made, and perhaps even their scariest, simplistic combat is the only thing that keeps this horror epic from reaching its true potential.
Regardless, this Silent Hill 2 remake is everything you could hope for and more, and hopefully, a sign of great things to come for the series. It’s a clever and inventive expansion of the original that you wouldn’t know you needed … until now.”
On the review aggregator Metacritic, Silent Hill is resting at an average of 86.
Congratulations to Bloober Team and Konami for earning a place in our top ten for 2024.
